Listing Optimization

GET SEEN, THEN TURN IT INTO SALES

We rebuild your listing on Amazon's search data: a product page that shows up for the right keywords, gets clicked, and converts. The goal is not ranking alone, it is raising the sales rate per session.

No credit card, not a sales call.

01

What is Amazon listing optimization and what does it change?

Amazon listing optimization is the rebuilding of a product detail page around both Amazon's search algorithm and the person making the purchase decision. Mentoreis handles this work at the intersection of two separate disciplines: Amazon SEO, meaning showing up in the right searches, and CRO, meaning turning that visibility into sales. If either side is missing, the outcome is the same: you lose money. A perfect page nobody sees will not sell; a page that gets seen but does not persuade burns your ad budget.

Amazon's ranking algorithm, long known as A9 and today extended with meaning-based layers such as COSMO and Rufus, evaluates a listing against two questions: is this product relevant to this search, and does this product get purchased when it is shown. The first question is answered by text fields and structured product data. The second is answered by click-through rate, unit session percentage, price competitiveness, review quality, and return rate. So optimization is not just placing keywords, it is improving behavioral signals.

To talk in numbers: seller conversion rates on Amazon generally sit in the 3% to 10% band depending on category, and with a strong product and a properly built listing it is possible to go above 10%. 15% and above is the performance of Prime-badged, category-leading products, not a standard target. Moving the conversion rate from 8% to 12% increases sales by 50% on the same traffic and lowers ACOS by roughly one third at the same CPC. That is why listing optimization is not a job separate from the ad budget, it is the precondition for advertising.

The mobile reality cannot be ignored either: more than half of Amazon's traffic comes from mobile devices, and on a mobile screen the user skims. The title has already been limited to 75 characters since July 27, 2026, so every word has to be earned one by one; the first three bullets are partially truncated on mobile and the product description sits below A+ Content. A page that looks perfect on desktop reads completely differently on mobile. Mentoreis designs every listing for the mobile view first and puts desktop second.

Özet
  • Listing optimization is the sum of two disciplines: Amazon SEO (visibility) and CRO (conversion).
  • Amazon seller conversion rates typically run 3-10% by category; a well-built listing can reach above 10%.
  • Raising CVR from 8% to 12% increases sales by 50% on the same traffic.
  • More than half of traffic comes from mobile, and the title has been limited to 75 characters since 2026.
  • The algorithm reads relevance from the copy and quality from CTR, CVR, price, and return rate.

Keyword research: with data, not guesswork

The foundation of Amazon SEO is knowing which words your product is actually searched with. The most common mistake here is the seller writing the product the way they describe it themselves. The customer does not search for the product in your language, but through their own problem. At Mentoreis the keyword set is built by cross-verifying three sources.

The first source is the Search Query Performance report inside Amazon Brand Analytics. This report is the only official Amazon data that shows how many impressions, clicks, add-to-carts, and purchases a search term produced in total and how much of that belongs to you. It is real data, not an estimate. The second source is reverse ASIN analysis: we extract which keywords category leaders rank for organically and through advertising using Helium 10 Cerebro, SellerSprite, and Data Dive. The keywords that remain in the intersection of five to ten competitor ASINs are the core keywords of the category. The third source is your own account's search term report: which terms you spend money on and which ones convert.

The collected keywords are not left as a raw list, they are split into three. Core keywords: high volume, directly describing the product, 3-5 terms that go into the title. Supporting keywords: mid-volume feature and use-case terms that go into the bullets and A+ copy. Long tail: low volume but high converting terms with clear intent, which go into the description and backend. Long tail keywords are small in individual volume but in aggregate produce more than 30% of organic sales in many categories.

The final step is the relevancy audit. The question asked before putting a keyword into your listing is this: when a customer running this search sees my page, will they click and will they buy? If the answer is no, that keyword does not go into the listing no matter what its volume is, because an impression that does not get clicked lowers CTR and weakens the listing's relevance score in the eyes of the algorithm. Chasing volume often damages ranking instead of improving it.

Özet
  • Search Query Performance is the only official Amazon report that gives your impression, click, cart, and purchase share for a keyword.
  • The keywords that intersect in the reverse analysis of 5-10 competitor ASINs are the category's core keywords.
  • The keyword set is split into three: core (title), supporting (bullets and A+), long tail (description and backend).
  • Long tail keywords produce more than 30% of organic sales in many categories.
  • Adding irrelevant high-volume keywords lowers CTR and damages ranking instead of improving it.

Title, bullets, and description: each field has its own job

The title is the most heavily weighted text field in Amazon SEO and the place where the click decision is made. The single most important rule of 2026 is in effect here: as of July 27, 2026, the title limit is 75 characters including spaces in every category other than Media (books, music, video). This is a radical narrowing compared to the previous 150-200 character space. Amazon is progressively rewriting listings that exceed the limit with its own AI, which means if you do nothing, Amazon decides your title for you. Brands with Brand Registry can review and correct these suggestions within 14 days from the Review Listings Changes screen; sellers without Brand Registry have no such right.

Fitting into 75 characters does not mean giving up what you have to say. With the same update Amazon opened a new 125-character Item Highlights field; this field is searchable, gets indexed, and appears right next to the title in search results. So the total budget is still 200 characters, but it is now split in two: 75 characters of title that wins the click, 125 characters of supporting detail. The title structure we work with is built around this limit: Brand + Main Core Keyword + Single Differentiating Feature + Size or Count. Everything that does not fit moves to Item Highlights. Shouting in capitals, prohibited phrases (best, number one, guaranteed), promotional copy, and repeating the same word all lower conversion and create suppression risk. Amazon gives you no extra ranking credit for repeating the same word in the title.

Bullet points are a persuasion field, not a keyword warehouse. The hierarchy we use for five bullets is this: the first bullet covers the main benefit, the second the differentiating technical feature, the third the use case and target audience, the fourth the quality, material, or certification assurance, and the fifth compatibility, measurements, warranty, and return assurance. The first 3-5 words of each bullet become a micro headline written in capitals, because on mobile the user skims. We keep bullet length around 200 characters; in most seller categories the technical limit is 255 characters and Amazon recommends keeping the total of five bullets under 1,000 characters. Anything longer gets truncated on mobile and the end of the message is lost.

The product description is pushed off the screen by A+ Content for brands with Brand Registry, but it continues to be indexed. That is why we use the description as a field that carries long tail keywords inside natural sentences and tells the product story. For sellers without Brand Registry, the description is still the primary persuasion field and is formatted with HTML using line spacing, bold text, and list structure.

The backend search terms field has a 249-byte limit, and this limit is calculated in bytes, not characters; Turkish characters and emoji take up more room than you expect. The rules are clear: do not repeat words that already appear in the title and bullets, do not write your own brand name or competitor brands, do not use commas, do not enter singular and plural forms separately. Using this field correctly is the most efficient way to index misspellings, alternative names, and second-language terms such as Spanish that cannot be written into the listing gracefully.

Özet
  • The title limit has been 75 characters including spaces in every category (except Media) since July 27, 2026
  • Amazon rewrites titles that exceed it with its AI; Brand Registry owners can object within 14 days
  • The new Item Highlights field is 125 characters, searchable and indexed; detail that does not fit the title moves here
  • Title formula: Brand + Core Keyword + Single Differentiating Feature + Size/Count
  • Five bullets: benefit, technical differentiation, use case, quality assurance, compatibility and warranty
  • Target 200 characters per bullet, the technical limit is 255 in most categories; five bullets together should stay under 1,000 characters
  • The backend search terms limit is 249 bytes; repetition, commas, brand names, and plural forms are wasted space

Images and A+ Content: the layer that really decides conversion

On Amazon the customer cannot touch the product, so the image set is the single biggest determinant of the purchase decision. The main image directly drives click-through rate. Its rules are strict: pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), the product must fill at least 85% of the square, and there must be no text, watermark, logo, packaging emphasis, or accessory on it. Technically a minimum of 1000x1000 pixels is required, but we recommend 2000x2000 pixels so the zoom feature works properly; zoom increases conversion measurably.

The gallery structure we work with consists of seven images: the main image, a measurement and size infographic, a lifestyle shot showing the product in real use, a feature infographic covering three critical benefits, a macro detail showing material and workmanship quality, a competitor comparison or box contents image, and finally a lifestyle frame that clarifies usage instructions or the target audience. On top of this we add a 15-30 second product video. When a video is present in the gallery it contributes noticeably to conversion in many categories and lowers the return rate, because it shows the product as it is.

A+ Content (formerly Enhanced Brand Content) is open to brands with Brand Registry. On its own page Amazon reports sales increases of up to 8% for Basic A+ and up to 20% for Premium A+. For brands with Premium A+ access this figure can go higher. But there is a frequently skipped fact about A+ Content: the text in A+ modules is not indexed for search, only image alt text makes a partial contribution. So A+ is not an SEO field, it is purely a persuasion field. We build the content accordingly: one message per module, cross-selling within your own product family through the comparison chart, and answering frequent objections in advance.

The Brand Story module appears above A+ Content and manages brand awareness and trust perception. Here you tell the brand, not the product: why it was founded, the production standard, who it is made for. Also, the product carousel inside Brand Story raises basket value because it directs the customer to other products in your store.

Özet
  • Main image: pure white background, the product must fill at least 85% of the square, 2000x2000 pixels recommended.
  • A seven-image gallery structure: main, measurement, lifestyle, benefit infographic, macro detail, comparison, usage.
  • A 15-30 second product video increases conversion and reduces returns caused by mismatched expectations.
  • A+ Content delivers an average 5-15% conversion increase, but its text is not indexed for search.
  • The Brand Story module raises brand trust and, through the product carousel, basket value.

The Mentoreis listing process: setup in five steps

Step 1, Diagnosis (Days 1-5). We map the current listing's indexing status, its organic rank for target keywords, session count and unit session percentage from Business Reports, return rate, and review profile. The answer we are looking for here is this: is the problem in traffic or in conversion? If session count is high but conversion is low, the problem is on the image, price, and persuasion side. If session count is low, the problem is on the keyword and indexing side. Every intervention made without drawing this distinction is guesswork.

Step 2, Keyword Architecture (Days 5-10). Search Query Performance, reverse ASIN analysis, and your own search term report are combined to build core, supporting, and long tail keyword sets. Which field each keyword will go into is mapped in advance, so the same word is not repeated across multiple fields and space is not wasted.

Step 3, Copy Production (Days 10-18). The title, five bullets, product description, and backend search terms are written. The copy is not thought out in Turkish and then translated into English; it is written in the target market's language, according to that market's buying culture. The direct benefit language that works in the American market does not work in Germany unless the expectation of technical specifications is met.

Step 4, Images and A+ (Days 15-30). The image brief, infographic copy, and A+ module structure are prepared, and the design is produced. Each image is designed to answer an objection: complaints that repeat in your reviews and in competitor reviews are turned directly into image content. Competitors' one-star reviews are the most productive source for an image brief.

Step 5, Testing and Validation (Day 30 onward). The published listing goes through an indexing check: does the product actually show up when the target keywords are searched. Then an A/B test is set up with Amazon's own Manage Your Experiments tool. This tool is open to brands with Brand Registry and tests title, main image, A+ Content, and bullet variants on real traffic. The test runs for at least 4 weeks, because shorter results are not statistically meaningful. The effect of each changed field is measured one at a time; if you change both the title and the image at once, you can never know which one worked.

Özet
  • Days 1-5 diagnosis: whether the problem is traffic or conversion, separated with the Business Reports unit session percentage.
  • Days 5-10 keyword architecture: which field each keyword goes into is mapped in advance.
  • Days 10-18 copy: written in the target market's language, not translated.
  • Days 15-30 images and A+: competitors' one-star reviews are the source of the image brief.
  • Day 30+ testing: at least a 4-week A/B test with Manage Your Experiments, single variable.

The listing mistakes we see most often

The first mistake is turning the title into a keyword warehouse. Turning the title into a pile of comma-separated keywords earns no extra credit with Amazon, lowers click-through rate, and is not even possible under the new 75-character limit. The most common mistake we see after 2026 is leaving the title to be shortened by Amazon's AI and never filling in the Item Highlights field. Amazon's own style guide explicitly treats this as against the rules and can apply suppression from search results.

The second mistake is a weak main image. The product staying small inside the square, flat lighting with no shadow, an angle that fails to present the product. The main image is seen side by side with your competitors in search results, and the click decision is made right there. A weak main image means the rest of the listing is never read.

The third mistake is leaving structured product data empty. Category-specific attributes, material, color, target audience, compatibility, item, and size fields are not just information; they are the source of the filters and refinements in Amazon's left menu. If these fields are empty, the listing drops out of the results the moment a customer applies a filter. In our audits this is the field that delivers the most gain and is neglected the most.

The fourth mistake is writing a listing by translation. Transferring Turkish copy into English with machine translation means both an unnatural language and missing the words the category actually uses. The fifth mistake is building the variation structure wrong: opening color and size variants as separate listings causes reviews and sales history to fragment; a properly built parent-child structure collects the reviews of all variants on a single page. The sixth mistake is writing the listing once and never coming back to it. Competitors change, search terms shift seasonally, new objections appear in new reviews. A listing is a living asset; it should be reviewed at least once every three months.

Özet
  • Turning the title into a comma-separated keyword list: no extra ranking credit, CTR loss, and suppression risk.
  • A weak main image: it directly loses the click decision in search results.
  • Structured product attributes left empty: the listing drops out of results when a filter is applied.
  • Copy written with machine translation: it misses the category's real keywords.
  • Opening variants as separate listings: reviews and sales history fragment.
  • Writing the listing once and never updating it: a revision is needed at least every 3 months.

How are results measured?

The impact of listing optimization is measured not by feel, but by four indicators in Amazon's own reports. The first is unit session percentage: this metric inside Business Reports tells you how many of the sessions that saw your page turned into sales, and it is the most direct measure of listing quality. The second is click-through rate: the result produced jointly by the title, main image, price, and review rating. The third is organic rank for target keywords. The fourth is the return rate: a properly built listing lowers returns because it manages expectations correctly.

Let us be clear about the timeline. Text changes generally take 24 to 72 hours to be fully reflected in Amazon's index, but the change in organic rank takes 2 to 4 weeks to settle, because the algorithm needs to accumulate the new signals. Change in conversion rate shows up faster: the effect of an image and A+ update generally becomes readable in unit session percentage within the first 7-14 days.

The second measurement axis is on the advertising side, and this is where most sellers miss out. When listing conversion goes up, the quality signal of your Amazon ad rises too; you appear higher and cheaper at the same bid. In practice, moving the conversion rate from 8% to 12% lowers ACOS by roughly one third without changing a single ad setting. That is why at Mentoreis listing and PPC are not two separate projects, they are two sides of the same profit equation.

Finally, an honest limit: listing optimization cannot rescue an uncompetitive price, a review profile averaging 3.5 stars, or a product of insufficient quality. These three factors determine the ceiling of a product page. Optimization gets you to that ceiling; it does not raise it.

Özet
  • Main metric: unit session percentage inside Business Reports.
  • Copy changes are indexed in 24-72 hours; organic rank settles in 2-4 weeks.
  • The effect of images and A+ is generally readable in the conversion rate within 7-14 days.
  • When CVR goes from 8% to 12%, ACOS drops by roughly one third with no ad setting changed.
  • Price, review profile, and product quality set the page's ceiling; optimization gets you to that ceiling.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

The questions we get most often, answered directly.

Amazon listing optimization is the rebuilding of a product detail page around both the search algorithm and the customer making the purchase decision. The title, bullet points, product description, backend search terms, image set, A+ Content, and structured product attributes are handled as one whole. The goal runs in two directions: showing up in the right searches and turning that visibility into sales.

Amazon SEO consists of three steps. First the keyword set is built from real search data: Brand Analytics Search Query Performance, reverse analysis of competitor ASINs, and your own search term report. Then the keywords are distributed across fields by weight: core keywords into the title, supporting ones into the bullets, long tail terms into the description and backend. Finally indexing is verified and the conversion signals, meaning CTR and CVR, are improved.

As of July 27, 2026, the title limit is 75 characters including spaces in every category other than Media (books, music, video). The previous 150-200 character space is gone. Amazon is progressively rewriting titles that exceed the limit with its own AI; brands with Brand Registry can review these changes within 14 days from the Review Listings Changes screen. The structure we recommend: Brand + Main Core Keyword + Single Differentiating Feature + Size or Count. For details that do not fit the title, Amazon opened the 125-character Item Highlights field with the same update; that field is also searchable and indexed, so your total copy budget is still 200 characters but it is now split in two.

The backend search terms field has a 249-byte limit, and this limit is calculated in bytes, not characters. Do not use commas, separate the words with spaces. Do not repeat words that already appear in the title and bullets, do not write your own brand or competitor brands, do not enter singular and plural forms separately. The most efficient approach is to use this field for misspellings, alternative names, and second-language terms.

Yes. On its own page Amazon reports sales increases of up to 8% for Basic A+ and up to 20% for Premium A+. Premium A+ has been free since May 2026 and is broadly open to sellers with Brand Registry; the conditions are having published a Brand Story and having completed five approved A+ projects in the last 12 months. But there is one point to watch: the text in A+ modules is not indexed for search. So A+ is not an SEO field, it is purely a persuasion and brand trust field.

We recommend seven images including the main image, plus one video. The order is built like this: white background main image, measurement infographic, lifestyle usage frame, benefit infographic, macro detail shot, comparison or box contents, usage instructions. A minimum of 1000x1000 pixels is mandatory for the main image, but we recommend 2000x2000 pixels so the zoom feature works.

Copy changes are generally reflected in Amazon's index within 24 to 72 hours. The change in organic ranking takes 2 to 4 weeks to settle, because the algorithm needs to accumulate the new conversion signals. The effect of image and A+ Content updates on conversion is readable faster; it generally becomes visible in unit session percentage within 7-14 days.

Seller conversion rates on Amazon are generally in the 3% to 10% band depending on category; with a well-built listing, above 10% is a reachable target. The 15% and above band is seen in Prime-badged, category-leading products. You can track your own rate from the unit session percentage metric inside Business Reports. If you are below 8%, the problem is usually in the main image, price position, or review profile.

Yes, indirectly but powerfully. In the Amazon advertising auction, a listing with a high conversion rate appears higher and cheaper at the same bid. In practice, moving the conversion rate from 8% to 12% lowers ACOS by roughly one third without changing a single ad setting. That is why listing and PPC should not be treated as separate projects.

Brands with Brand Registry can use Amazon's own Manage Your Experiments tool. This tool compares title, main image, A+ Content, and bullet variants on real traffic. The test needs to run for at least 4 weeks, since shorter results are not statistically meaningful. The critical rule is to test one variable at a time: if you change both the title and the image at once, you cannot know which one worked.

No. Copy produced with machine translation both creates an unnatural language and misses the search terms the category actually uses. The copy should be written in the target market's language and according to that market's buying culture. The direct benefit language that works in the US market does not deliver the same result in Germany unless the expectation of technical specifications is met.
