What Is Amazon SEO and How Does It Differ from Google SEO?

Amazon SEO is the work of moving a product up the Amazon search results for targeted keywords organically, meaning without paying for ads. It shares a name with Google SEO, but it is not the same job. Google tries to show the user the best answer, while Amazon tries to show the product that will generate the most revenue per search. That one sentence of difference changes the entire strategy: on Amazon there is no ranking factor called backlinks, domain authority, or content length. In their place come sales velocity, conversion rate, inventory continuity, price competitiveness, and customer satisfaction signals.

The numbers show why this difference is critical. Roughly 70% of Amazon shoppers never go beyond the first page of search results, and the top three organic results collect about 60% of the clicks. Page 2 is practically invisible territory. We have measured many times that the same product, at the same price and with the same images, sees its daily sales rise 5 to 10 times when it moves from page 3 to page 1. That is the work in Amazon SEO: not creating traffic, but getting in front of search that already exists.

The Mentoreis Amazon SEO service targets exactly this transition. Getting the product indexed for the right keywords, rewriting the listing for conversion, increasing sales velocity in a controlled way, and making sure the organic ranking you earn stays standing when the ads are turned off. Winning a position is not a campaign job, it is a matter of building the system correctly.

Özet
  • The currency of Amazon SEO is sales velocity, not backlinks
  • Rankings outside the first page produce practically no traffic
  • Ranking follows the conversion rate, not the other way around
  • Visibility bought with ads is expensive, organic ranking is durable
  • The target is not the number of keywords but your purchase share on those keywords

How Does the Amazon Search Algorithm Determine Ranking? A9 and A10

Amazon's search algorithm evaluates products in two blocks: relevance and performance. The relevance block looks at whether the product is indexed for that keyword. As a rule, a product cannot rank for a word that never appears in its text. The title, bullet points, product description, backend search terms, and structured product attributes form the indexing pool. The performance block looks at who earns Amazon more money on that keyword: click-through rate, sales per session (Unit Session Percentage), sales velocity, return rate, review rating, and inventory status.

The current behavior the industry calls A10 differs from the old A9 logic in three places. First, the weight of organic sales relative to sponsored sales has increased; products pushed only with PPC lose their ranking quickly when the ads stop. Second, seller authority, meaning account health, return rate, late shipment rate, and message response time, is reflected in ranking more clearly. Third, traffic that arrives from outside Amazon and converts into sales is rewarded; a converting visitor coming through social media or Google is now a measurable advantage.

In practice, three thresholds are decisive. Among sellers there is a concept known as the honeymoon period: the assumption that in the first weeks of a new listing the algorithm tests the product and grants it temporary visibility. Amazon has never officially confirmed such a feature, and recent observations show that the idea of a fixed bonus window has lost its validity; the algorithm positions a new product more by matching it with similar successful products. Even so, the practical outcome does not change: the conversion and sales velocity data accumulated in the first weeks of the launch determines the product's long-term position, which is why setting the listing up correctly before traffic arrives is critical. Running out of stock takes back an organic ranking built over months within 24 to 72 hours. And a rating average that falls below 4.3 directly breaks conversion, and therefore ranking.

Özet
  • Indexing check: if the product does not appear when you search the ASIN and the keyword together, you cannot rank for that keyword
  • Unit Session Percentage is the real conversion metric Amazon shows you
  • The honeymoon period is not a feature confirmed by Amazon; what actually matters is the conversion data accumulated in the first weeks of the launch
  • Running out of stock takes back organic ranking within 24-72 hours
  • Account health thresholds, an order defect rate under 1% and late shipment under 4%, are an indirect ranking factor
03

Keyword Research: Chasing Conversion, Not Volume

In Amazon keyword research the right target is not the highest search volume but the highest conversion potential. Ranking 40th on a generic keyword with 70,000 searches produces far fewer sales than ranking 3rd on a niche keyword with 4,000 searches. That is why Mentoreis builds the keyword list by relevance and click share, not by volume.

The process starts with reverse ASIN analysis. Every keyword the top 10 to 15 competitor ASINs in the category rank for is extracted; in a typical category that means between 800 and 3,000 raw keywords. Then three filters are applied: the relevance filter, meaning is the product really the answer to that search; the commercial intent filter, meaning does the keyword carry purchase intent; and the competition filter, meaning are the review counts and price range of the products on the first page compatible with your product. What usually remains is 150 to 400 usable keywords, and out of those, 15 to 25 core target keywords.

For brands with Brand Registry, the decisive data is Amazon's own Brand Analytics report. Search Frequency Rank gives the real popularity rank of a keyword inside Amazon and, unlike third party estimates, comes directly from Amazon; the smaller the number, the more popular the keyword. The same report shows the three most clicked ASINs for each keyword, along with their click share and conversion share. If the top three ASINs on a keyword take more than 60% of the clicks, that keyword is heavily locked up and is not chosen as a launch keyword. Tools like SellerSprite enrich this picture with volume trends, seasonality, and competitor sales estimates.

Özet
  • Reverse ASIN analysis is always more valuable than keyword lists built on guesswork
  • Search Frequency Rank is Amazon's own search popularity rank; a smaller number means more popular
  • If the click share of the top 3 ASINs on a keyword is above 60%, it is not suitable for a launch
  • Target structure: 15-25 core keywords, 150-400 supporting keywords
  • Seasonal keywords should enter the listing 8-12 weeks before the season
  • Long tail keywords have lower volume but typically 2-3 times higher conversion

Listing Optimization: Title, Bullets, Backend, and A+ Content

Listing optimization has to do two jobs at once: give the algorithm the keywords to index, and write the copy that makes a human buy. The technical limits of the fields are fixed and vary by category; any listing written without knowing those limits is a waste of space.

The title limit has been 75 characters in every category except Media since July 27, 2026, but only the first 70 to 80 characters show in mobile search results, and in many categories the Amazon style guide asks for a shorter title. The main keyword should sit within the first 80 characters, right after the brand name. In the five bullet fields the technical limit is 255 characters per bullet in most seller categories, and Amazon recommends that the total of the five bullets stay under 1,000 characters; in practice around 200 characters is the target. The first two bullets are the field that affects conversion most, and they should describe benefits, not features. The backend search terms field is limited to 249 bytes in total, and that limit applies to the sum of the five lines. Writing commas, your brand name, a competitor brand, an ASIN, or repetitions into this field is a waste of space; single words separated by spaces is the most efficient use. The product description is 2,000 characters and is visually replaced by A+ Content once that is published.

On the image side, the main image must sit on a pure white background and the product should fill roughly 85% of the frame. For zoom, a long edge of at least 1,000 pixels is enough; Amazon's recommended optimal value is 1,600 pixels and above. Six to seven images plus one video is the standard combination today. The text of A+ Content does not enter the search index, meaning it brings no ranking directly, but because it typically raises conversion by 5% to 10%, it lifts ranking indirectly. When Mentoreis writes a listing, we verify that every core keyword appears at least once inside a natural sentence; repeating the same keyword on Amazon earns no additional ranking, it only costs you space for new keywords.

Özet
  • Title: main keyword in the first 80 characters, brand at the very front, mind the category limit
  • Backend search terms: 249 bytes total, no commas, no repetition, no brand name
  • Bullet points: 200-500 characters depending on category, the first two bullets are critical for conversion
  • Main image: pure white background, long edge at least 1,000 pixels for zoom, 1,600 pixels and above recommended
  • A+ Content is not indexed but raises conversion 5-10%, and requires Brand Registry
  • Repeating the same keyword in the title, bullets, and backend brings no ranking

Conversion Rate: The Real Engine of Organic Ranking

The only real lever that raises ranking on Amazon is the conversion rate. Amazon reports it inside Business Reports under the name Unit Session Percentage: units sold divided by the number of unique sessions that reached the product page. It varies by category, but in a healthy listing this rate is between 10% and 15%, and on well optimized private label products it goes above 20%. A listing below 5% cannot hold an organic ranking no matter how much traffic it receives, because Amazon sees every click as lost revenue.

The levers that affect conversion work in this order by speed of effect: price and coupon badge, main image and image set, review count and rating average, Prime badge and delivery speed, A+ Content and video, and the question and answer section. A product whose rating average falls below 4.3 loses conversion to its competitor even at the same price; 4.5 and above is practically a threshold value. The coupon badge raises not only conversion but also the click-through rate in search results, and when these two effects combine, its impact on ranking is greater than a price cut on its own.

On new products the first 15 to 30 reviews are the most critical period. The Amazon Vine program is a legitimate and official accelerator for up to 30 reviews per ASIN per brand. Buying or incentivizing reviews outside Vine results in account suspension, and Mentoreis does not use such methods. Instead we use in-package material that contains no review request, Amazon's own Request a Review automation, and product quality fixes driven by analysis of the return reasons report. The return reasons report is the most honest source of conversion problems, because it shows the gap between what the customer saw in the listing and what arrived in their hands.

Özet
  • Healthy Unit Session Percentage range is 10-15%, above 20% on good listings
  • Organic ranking cannot be maintained with conversion below 5%
  • When the rating average falls below 4.3, conversion deteriorates visibly
  • Amazon Vine: up to 30 reviews per ASIN, the only legitimate accelerator for first reviews
  • The coupon badge raises both click-through rate and conversion at the same time
  • The return reasons report reveals the expectation gap between the listing and the product

SEO and PPC Integration: Pushing Organic Ranking with Ads

On Amazon, SEO and PPC are not separate channels but two arms of the same system. Advertising is the most controlled way to buy the sales velocity needed to build organic ranking; organic ranking, in turn, lowers ad cost over time. In a properly built account this relationship is tracked with the TACoS metric, meaning total ad spend divided by total revenue. If TACoS is falling while revenue rises, the organic share is growing. During launch a TACoS of 20% to 30% is normal; on a mature product the target is 8% to 12%.

The campaign architecture is built in three layers. The discovery layer collects new search terms with automatic and broad match campaigns. The test layer filters those terms with phrase match. The harvest layer moves converting terms one by one into exact match campaigns and manages bids according to the ranking goal. The search term report is reviewed once a week and terms that do not convert are shut off as negative exact; in a typical account this routine cleanup alone recovers 15% to 25% of wasted ad spend.

The ranking push works on a keyword basis. To move from page 3 to page 1 on a keyword, you need to produce uninterrupted daily sales for that keyword over 7 to 14 days; a single day sales spike does not give a durable ranking, because the algorithm looks at sustainable performance rather than momentum. Mentoreis plans this push by calculating the daily sales target per keyword, the bid ceiling, and inventory sufficiency together. If inventory will not last to the end of the push period, the push is not started at all; building a ranking and then running out of stock is more expensive than never starting.

Özet
  • TACoS target: 20-30% at launch, 8-12% on a mature product
  • Three layer structure: discovery with automatic and broad, testing with phrase, harvesting with exact
  • A weekly negative keyword review recovers 15-25% of wasted ad spend
  • A ranking push requires 7-14 days of uninterrupted sales; a single day spike does not work
  • If ranking drops when the ads stop, the organic share was never built
  • Inventory sufficiency is always verified before a push is started

Measurement, Reporting, and the Mentoreis 90 Day Process

In Amazon SEO, work that is not measured cannot be managed. On every project Mentoreis tracks four data sources weekly: the Search Query Performance report inside Brand Analytics, Business Reports (sessions, page views, Unit Session Percentage), daily organic rank tracking on target keywords, and the BSR trend, which is the sales rank within the category.

Search Query Performance is the most powerful report Amazon gives sellers, because it shows not only your own data but the total market volume on that keyword and your share within it. If your impression share on a keyword is 12% but your purchase share is 4%, the problem is not ranking but conversion, and the budget should go to the listing, price, and images. In the opposite case, if conversion is good but impression share is low, the problem is visibility, and the budget should go to indexing and PPC. This single distinction determines the direction of every dollar spent.

A typical project calendar runs like this. First 2 weeks: technical audit, indexing check, keyword map, and competitive analysis. Weeks 3 and 4: rewriting the title, bullets, backend, and A+ Content, and preparing the image brief. Weeks 5 through 8: rebuilding the PPC structure and running a controlled ranking push. Weeks 9 through 12: harvest campaigns, negative keyword cleanup, price and coupon tests. Meaningful movement in organic ranking usually begins between day 30 and day 45; for a durable first page position on target keywords, 60 to 90 days is a realistic range. On new products with very few reviews this period can extend to 4 to 6 months, and Mentoreis states this clearly at the start of the project.

Özet
  • Weekly tracking set: Search Query Performance, Business Reports, organic ranking, BSR
  • If impression share is high and purchase share is low, the problem is conversion
  • If impression share is low and conversion is good, the problem is visibility
  • The first meaningful ranking movement is expected within 30-45 days
  • A realistic timeframe for a durable first page position is 60-90 days
  • No new wave of changes is started before the previous wave has been measured for at least 14 days

FAQ

Frequently Asked

The questions we get most often, answered directly.

Amazon SEO is moving a product up the Amazon search results for target keywords without paying for ads. Unlike Google SEO, backlinks and domain authority play no role; sales velocity, conversion rate, inventory continuity, and review quality are what matter. Because roughly 70% of Amazon shoppers never go past the first page, the target is always page one.

Listing and backend edits are usually reindexed by Amazon within 24-72 hours, but the ranking effect is not visible immediately. In typical projects meaningful ranking movement starts in 30-45 days, and a durable first page position on target keywords takes 60-90 days. On new products with very few reviews this period can extend to 4-6 months.

The current behavior referred to as A10 differs from A9 in three places. The weight of organic sales relative to sponsored sales has increased, meaning a product pushed only with ads loses its ranking quickly when the ads are cut. Seller authority, that is, metrics such as account health and return rate, is reflected in ranking more clearly. Third, traffic that arrives from outside Amazon and converts into sales is rewarded. Keyword stuffing, meanwhile, works less than it used to.

The backend search terms field is limited to 249 bytes in total, and that limit applies to the sum of the five lines, not per line. Separate keywords with spaces, not commas. Writing your brand name, competitor brands, ASINs, repetitions, and words that already appear in the title here is a waste of space, because Amazon already treats this field as a single keyword pool.

There is no fixed number; it depends on the competition for the target keyword. The practical benchmark is this: you need to reach at least 60-70% of the estimated daily sales of the products on the first page for that keyword, uninterrupted, for 7-14 days. On a low competition keyword that may be 5-10 units a day, while in crowded categories it can rise to 40-60 units a day.

It can, but it moves very slowly. Because Amazon grants ranking based on sales velocity, you end up with a no ranking without sales and no sales without ranking problem, and PPC is the most controlled tool for breaking that cycle. On the other hand, on mature products with existing sales, serious gains can be made with listing, price, and conversion optimization alone; in that case advertising is an accelerator, not a requirement.

The benchmark is the Unit Session Percentage metric inside Business Reports. In most categories 10-15% is considered healthy, and 20% and above is seen on well optimized products. Listings below 5% cannot hold organic ranking despite the traffic they receive; in that case price, the main image, and the review profile should be fixed first.

Short term fluctuation is normal. Amazon reevaluates the updated listing and there is usually a settling period of 3-14 days. To reduce the risk, instead of changing every field at once, update the title, bullets, and images in separate waves and measure each wave for at least 14 days. Changing the main image on a product that is selling well, without testing it, is the most common and most expensive mistake.

The text of A+ Content does not enter the Amazon search index, so it brings no ranking directly. But because it typically increases the conversion rate by 5-10%, it lifts ranking indirectly. When video and comparison modules are added with Premium A+, the effect grows further. Brand Registry is required in order to use A+ Content.

Technical audit and indexing check, a keyword map built with reverse ASIN analysis, rewriting the title, bullets, backend, and A+ Content, an image and video brief, rebuilding the PPC structure, and weekly reporting. The process typically runs as a 90 day cycle; measurement is done through the Search Query Performance report, Unit Session Percentage, and daily organic rank tracking.
